The most pessimistic climate change scientist has had a sudden change of heart

15K Mr Rockstrom has added deforestation to a list of “planetary boundaries” in the danger zone  Getty The world has a better chance of saving itself from catastrophic global warming now than at any time over the past two decades, according to the scientist behind some of the most alarming predictions ever made for the planet’s future. Johan Rockström shocked environmentalists in 2009 when he identified nine categories of Nature that were essential for life as we know it, and warned that we had already crossed into dangerous territory on three of them – including climate change. Rockström, an environmental science professor at Stockholm University and executive director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre, has since transferred a fourth category, deforestation, to his list of “planetary boundaries” in the danger zone, which threaten irreversible, devastating consequences to the planet. But he has had a dramatic change of heart over ...

Exxon Mobil Accused of Misleading Public on Climate Change Risks

Image
More than 40 of the nation’s leading environmental and social justice groups demanded a federal investigation of  Exxon Mobil  on Friday, accusing the huge  oil  and gas company of deceiving the American public about the risks of  climate change  to protect its profits. In a  letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch , the groups, citing recent news reports, suggested that Exxon Mobil might be guilty of the same kind of fraud that the tobacco companies were found to have perpetrated when they hid the risks of smoking. Those violations ultimately cost the companies tens of billions of dollars in penalties. The call for an investigation echoes demands made in recent days by three Democratic presidential candidates, including Hillary Rodham Clinton and Bernie Sanders, and by several Democrats in Congress. Exxon Mobil rejected the comparison to the tobacco industry, declaring that it had helped to finance accurate scientific research about...

Global warming SHOCK: Earth’s natural coolant could be TWICE as powerful as first thought

Image
A NATURAL cooling process which reverses the effects of global warming could be nearly TWICE as powerful as scientists previously believed. By  ROB VIRTUE PUBLISHED:  13:51, Fri, Oct 2, 2015   | UPDATED:  18:08, Fri, Oct 2, 2015 2K 209 GETTY The research has thrown climate change estimates in doubt Research has identified a natural system where volatile organic compounds (VOC) are emitted into the air from the sea. These VOCs cause the climate to cool and may explain why world temperatures have remained stable for around 15 years, despite widespread claims that global warming is out of control. The German government's Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research found a key VOC known as Isoprene, which was only thought to have been produced by living organisms such as plankton, is actually also created by the sun hitting chemicals at the top of the ocean. Measurements had estimated 1....
