While making a dream trip to Antarctica, local girl Toni Brooks is studying firsthand what global warming is doing to the environment across the world. Ice melting thousands of miles away impacts Guam's sea life.

Brooks says it's important for people, even in the tropics, to understand that changes in Antarctica affect global weather and our reefs.

"As ice caps melt at an accelerated pace, sea levels rise, drowning our shores. Also, as the reflective barrier of ice recedes, more UV heats up the surface temperatures, further facilitating greenhouse effects," she says.

The cascading effects of climate change include bleached reefs and oxygen-depleted dead zones.

"If we kill the oceans, we kill the foundations of our food chain and our survival on this planet," she says.

Brooks says that small lifestyle changes can have an impact on climate change.

"Hold leaders and businesses responsible for their actions against the environment. Reduce waste, recycle, reuse. Learn every day about another beautiful aspect of our island and our culture, and pass all of this on to the next generation," she says. "If we take care of Guam, it will take care of us."
